DESCRIPTION:Community School of Music and Arts Presents\n\nthe Langston Hughes Project\, March 17\n\n \n\nMOUNTAIN VIEW\, CA The Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) in Mountain View presents a free performance of the Langston Hughes Project on Sunday\, March 17 at 2:00pm. The event will be held in Tateuchi Hall at the Community School of Music and Arts\, located at 230 San Antonio Circle in Mountain View. This concert is free and open to the public. Seating is limited\; please arrive early. Doors open at 1:30pm.\n\n \n\nThe Langston Hughes Project is a multimedia concert performance of Langston Hughes' kaleidoscopic jazz poem suite\, "Ask Your Mama: Twelve Moods for Jazz." It is a twelve-part epic poem which Hughes scored with musical cues drawn from blues and Dixieland\, gospel songs\, boogie woogie\, bebop\, progressive jazz\, Latin "cha cha\," Afro-Cuban mambo music\, German lieder\, Jewish liturgy\, West Indian calypso\, and African drumming a creative masterwork left unperformed at his death. Though Hughes originally intended to collaborate with others on the performance of this masterwork\, it remained only in the planning stages when Langston Hughes dies in 1967. Its recovery now in word\, music and image provides a galvanizing experience for audiences everywhere.\n\n \n\nThe performance is brought to life by the extraordinary talents of the Ron McCurdy Quartet. Dr. Ronald C. McCurdy is Professor of Music in the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California (USC) and is Past-President of the International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE). Prior to his appointment at USC he served as Director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at USC. He has released two CDs. - The first one titled\, "Once Again for the First Time" on the INNOVA label and the most recent CD titled "April In Paris" with his vocal funk group\, The Ron McCurdy Collective. He is co-author of a vocal jazz improvisation series titled "Approaching the Standards"\, published by Warner Bros. Dr. McCurdy is the director of the National Grammy Vocal Jazz Ensemble and combo\, and also serves as Director of the Walt Disney All-American College Band in Anaheim\, CA. HeDr. McCurdy has performed with a host of legendary jazz artists\, including Wynton Marsalis\, Joe Williams and Rosemary Clooney. He is a performing artist for the Yamaha International Corporation.\n\n \n\nThis event is part of CSMA's 2018-2019 Community Concert Series. In keeping with CSMA's mission to provide Arts for All\, Community Concerts are free and open to the public. Located in Mountain View\, CSMA provides unique music and visual arts programming and events for audiences of all ages and backgrounds. The Community Concert Series is supported by a generous grant from the Applied Materials Foundation. The official media sponsor for the series is Classical KDFC radio.
