EDUCATION & SCHOOLS
Local public school districts are all highly regarded for their fine academic programs. Most elementary students in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills attend schools in the Los Altos School District which serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade and is comprised of seven elementary schools-Almond, Bullis-Purissima (Full Day Kindergarten Program only), Covington, Loyola, Oak, Santa Rita, and Springer-and two junior high schools-Egan and Blach.

Alta Vista High School |
Well-known for academic excellence, all eight of the Los Altos School District schools are among the top one percent of schools in the state of California, as ranked by the state's Academic Performance Index. The district as a whole has received the highest standardized test scores of all districts in California for seven years in a row, according to the Associated Press. All nine of the schools are California Distinguished Schools, and two are National Blue Ribbon Schools. Elementary students receive a rigorous academic program in self-contained classrooms, supplemented by instruction from specialists in music, art, physical education and computers. Intermediate school students are able to take seven subjects, including a choice of two languages, honors algebra, industrial technology, computer programming, art, music, drama, journalism and home arts.
The district received votes of confidence from the community in 1989, 1993, 1997 2002 and 2006 with the passage of a parcel tax to be used to balance the school budget and restore previously cut programs. A bond for modernization and new construction at district schools was passed in 1998. Phase I construction projects have been completed at eight school sites and are currently underway at Bullis-Purissima School. The district is planning to ask the voters to consider passing a general obligation bond in November 2008 to finish the projects in phase II. District enrollment is projected to be 4,299 for the 2007-2008 school year. Average class size in K-3 is 19 and in grades 4-8 it’s 26.
High School Level
At the high school level, students attend Alta Vista High School, Los Altos High School or Mountain View High School, part of the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District serving students in grades nine through twelve from Los Altos, Los Altos Hills and Mountain View. All three high schools have been named California Distinguished Schools while Mountain View High has also been selected as a National Distinguished School.
